The clinic is an institution with one of the richest traditions in Magdeburg, which celebrated in 2006 it's 100th anniversary. Since the beginning it has belonged to the Catholic Charitable Organisation of Saint Elizabeth (Katholische Wohltätigkeitsanstalt zur Heiligen Elisabeth). The house has existed since 1906 and was at first an institution for looking after working parents' children of school age, orphans and the elderly and infirm. It also served as a housekeeping school for girls. The first storey was used as a hospital for the first time in 1909, and during the First World War the whole building was a military hospital. It was also allocated this function in the Second World War and has remained a hospital since that time. Until today the Marienstift developed to a modern efficient hospital.
